Marylin Burns, mathematics educator.

Our practical, hands-on course is for educational specialists, who want to learn how to work effectively with students to assess their achievement. Today, we know learning requires that the learner engage in problem-solving to actively build mental models. Knowledge is attained not just by receiving information, but also by interpreting the information and relating it to the learner's knowledge base. What is important, and therefore should be assessed, is the learner's ability to organize, structure, and use information in context to solve complex problems. The distance learning, during the pandemic time last one year, changed the way of the assessment in schools. eTests, eGames and eAssignments replaced paper-based assessments in schools. The pandemic will take effect on the educational methods and practices even in post-pandemic times. All types of electronic assessment will be part of the school life in the future. Test-taking is more than just bubble-filling. Teachers use it to learn about students’ needs, and after this course you can use the same results to help your pupils, too. Understanding the different types of testing, the kinds of results they provide, and how they complement one another will help teachers use this information in the best way to help their pupils learn. During the course the participants will learn how to design different types of tests and what tools/apps they can use to create eTests, eAssignments and eGames and other eGadgets.

The pre-school teachers: Throughout the course, participants will get familiar with the innovative methodological approach of using multimedia and online based materials in the kindergartens by the method “learning by doing”. They will learn how to apply different activities to asses child's development in five main areas: cognitive development, social and emotional development, speech and language, fine motor skills and gross motor skills. Despite presenting innovative best practice, the course shows how basic psychological needs of safety, belongingness and self-esteem needs to be put on the first place during the kindergartens closures. The pre-school teachers can create multimedia materials for parents, to provide interaction and support with health habits, games, and reading; understand the perspective of children and connect the home situation with age-specific development; and prepare for challenges while being flexible in their expectations.

The school teachers: The participants from the different school levels will get familiar with the innovative methodological approach in the education, of creating and using interactive multimedia and web based materials in the fields of science, mathematics, humanistic studies and sports obtained within several workshops led by the method “learning by doing”. The course shows how basic psychological needs of safety, belongingness and self-esteem needs to be put on the first place when using web-based educational resources. The participants will acquire competences to design and implement assessment materials, based on implementation of multimedia materials, web based platforms for simulations, video as tool for students assessment (flipgrid), interactive video instructions, to create branched scenarios to create interactive educational materials etc.

Main topics of this course:

The main topics of our structured course are targeting on the online assessment of the students and using different tools for that purpose. Online assessment can be done at any time or place, provided learners have access to the internet. Online assessment transforms learning. Why do we ask test-takers to write their exams by hand, when it is an inescapable fact that modern life is digital? Online or digital assessment is all about learners applying their knowledge and skills to real-world situations.
The digitalization of assessments leads to educational transformation for every test-taker and staff member involved.
What are the benefits of the eAssessment?

  • can be used across all disciplines and levels.
  • is open to place and time and can underpin targeted support systems.
  • offers long term pay back on investment.
  • engages students.
  • provides feedback instantly and can be tailored to the individual student. Feedback loops can direct the student to further questions or other scheduled activities and can embed the assessment firmly within the overall learning experience.

By the end of the course participants will identify electronic assessment options that facilitate improved pedagogical practices and address existing administrative issues. They will know how the technology can be used for assessing the students’ skills. It is therefore important for teachers to reflect on their practices and summarize what worked and did not work. Teachers will know how to use tools and platforms to create eTests, eGames and eAssignments. The participants will learn about the digital resources for students’ assessment. They will gain not only theoretical knowledge about digital tools but also will learn how to create interactive learning resources suitable for students. The participants will gain practical knowledge on how to create eTests by using common ePlatforms that schools use for distance learning nowadays. The participants will also learn about the gamification and basics of teaching with games.

  • Tests as tools for assessment and as tools for helping students learning. Assessment of learning, assessment for learning and assessment as learning.
  • Four types of testing in schools today — diagnostic, formative, benchmark, and summative assessment.
  • eTests: Overview of platforms and apps for creating eTests.
  • Creating eTests on MS Forms. The benefits of the Math option. How to add branching to MS Form test.
  • Creating eTests on Google Form. Section based on answer option.
  • How to create an educational “escape room” type game with MS Forms and Google Form.
  • MS Teams eAssignments and how to use them for online assessment and to make the lessons more interactive.
  • Create quizzes and tests, manage student expectations, engage students, and even run a teacher training workshop with Mentimeter.
  • Real-time feedback with Mentimeter. How to Integrate Mentimeter with Google apps (Google Slides) or MS PowerPoint.
  • Plickers - Collect formative assessment data in real time with no need for student devices.
  • Make digital paper-based assessments with Liveworksheets app.
